"Delta is pleased to be a part of the Olympic experience and have our Connection carriers join us in support of our Olympic sponsorship and transportation of the Olympic Flame," said Vicki Escarra, executive vice president and chief marketing officer for Delta. "Through their participation, Delta will be able to share the passion, inspiration and rich heritage of the Olympic Winter Games with more of our customers and communities."
The Olympic flame was ignited on Nov. 19 at a ceremony in Ancient Olympia, Greece and was carried to Athens, where it will be handed to Salt Lake City officials. While traveling to Atlanta, Delta will house the Flame in a specially designed miners safety lantern. The lantern will then be attached to a bulkhead wall inside the aircraft, where the flame will remain lit throughout the flight, which arrives in Atlanta on Dec. 4. Delta has worked extensively with the Georgia Institute of Technology and Federal Aviation Administration to test the lantern to ensure safe operations during flight.
The 2002 Torch Relay will be the most extensive and far-reaching in Olympic Winter Games history. The Relay will travel coast-to-coast, visit more than 80 cities, cover more than 13,500 miles, involve more than 11,500 torchbearers, and be seen by as many as 137 million people.
Delta Connection carriers will transport the Flame at four points on the relay route in a specially painted Olympic-themed Canadair regional jet. The livery features a dramatic yellow-blue-and-orange design capturing the imagery of Salt Lake City and the spirit of the Olympic Winter Games.
"The Olympic Winter Games are a celebration of community spirit, cooperation and teamwork. We are honored to play a role in such a historic event," said Fred Buttrell, president of Delta Connection. "Our ability to be an official provider in the Torch Relay is a great example of how Delta and the Delta Connection carriers work together as a team to serve communities and our customers.''
Delta is the Official Airline Sponsor of the 2002 Olympic Winter Games and the Official Charter Flight Provider of the 2002 Torch Relay. Delta also was the Official Airline of the 1996 Centennial Olympic Games in Atlanta, transporting the Olympic Flame from Greece to the United States for the summer games.
