Delta, Delta Connection Carriers to carry Olympic Flame on special-livery aircraft

ATLANTA, Nov. 29, 2001 -- Delta Air Lines today announced that Delta and Delta Connection carriers will carry the Olympic Flame as part of Delta's providership of the Salt Lake 2002 Olympic Torch Relay, presented by Coca-Cola and Chevrolet. Delta will transport the Olympic Flame on its Boeing 777 Olympic aircraft, Soaring Spirit II. The aircraft sports a stunning livery design featuring images of Bonnie Blair, Duncan Kennedy and Ryan Heckman.

"Delta is pleased to be a part of the Olympic experience and have our Connection carriers join us in support of our Olympic sponsorship and transportation of the Olympic Flame," said Vicki Escarra, executive vice president and chief marketing officer for Delta. "Through their participation, Delta will be able to share the passion, inspiration and rich heritage of the Olympic Winter Games with more of our customers and communities."

The Olympic flame was ignited on Nov. 19 at a ceremony in Ancient Olympia, Greece and was carried to Athens, where it will be handed to Salt Lake City officials. While traveling to Atlanta, Delta will house the Flame in a specially designed miner’s safety lantern. The lantern will then be attached to a bulkhead wall inside the aircraft, where the flame will remain lit throughout the flight, which arrives in Atlanta on Dec. 4. Delta has worked extensively with the Georgia Institute of Technology and Federal Aviation Administration to test the lantern to ensure safe operations during flight.

The 2002 Torch Relay will be the most extensive and far-reaching in Olympic Winter Games history. The Relay will travel coast-to-coast, visit more than 80 cities, cover more than 13,500 miles, involve more than 11,500 torchbearers, and be seen by as many as 137 million people.

Delta Connection carriers will transport the Flame at four points on the relay route in a specially painted Olympic-themed Canadair regional jet. The livery features a dramatic yellow-blue-and-orange design capturing the imagery of Salt Lake City and the spirit of the Olympic Winter Games.

"The Olympic Winter Games are a celebration of community spirit, cooperation and teamwork. We are honored to play a role in such a historic event," said Fred Buttrell, president of Delta Connection. "Our ability to be an official provider in the Torch Relay is a great example of how Delta and the Delta Connection carriers work together as a team to serve communities and our customers.''

Delta is the Official Airline Sponsor of the 2002 Olympic Winter Games and the Official Charter Flight Provider of the 2002 Torch Relay. Delta also was the Official Airline of the 1996 Centennial Olympic Games in Atlanta, transporting the Olympic Flame from Greece to the United States for the summer games.

Delta’s goal is to become the No. 1 airline in the eyes of its customers, flying passengers and cargo from anywhere to everywhere. People choose to fly Delta more often than any other airline in the world on 4,850 flights each day to 368 cities in 65 countries on Delta, Delta Express, Delta Shuttle, Delta Connection carriers and Delta’s Worldwide Partners. Delta is a founding member of SkyTeam, a global airline alliance that gives customers extensive worldwide destinations, flights and services. In addition to safely and securely making reservations and purchasing tickets at delta.com, Delta customers can select seats, upgrade, get up-to-date flight information, make accommodations reservations, and more. U.S.-based travel agencies also can access Delta Web fares for their customers via delta.com’s Online Agency Service Center. For more information, go to www.delta.com.

Avid Collector Shares Collection With Pride

Dear Judy and Shawna:

I would like to say thank you for taking the time to help me place my airplane order and I was happy to see Flight Miniatures.

The building is so big and seeing the glass showcase impressed me. I saw so many different jet liner models and you have a great location next to the airport.

I have enclosed several different photos of my hobby of my scaled model airport. This is a scaled (model) of Baltimore/Washington International BWI Airport. My airport platform is all in 1:200 scale. It is electronic and it lights up at night just like the real international airports do.

I enjoy doing business with you and I remember my very first airplane order I bought, Midway Airlines. I have a Midway Fleet. I own two DC-9-30 jets and one Boeing B-737-200. My Midway fleet is in a 1990 OC, old color scheme.

I own 200 jetliner models for now; it’s not the total. I am almost done with my jetliner collection.

I enjoyed my visit in Cottonwood, Arizona.

Sincerely,

Frank Polk

Genesis of Flight Miniatures

To say that Bob Flynn, the founder and President of Flight Miniatures, has always loved aviation is a considerable understatement. He learned to fly a Piper Cherokee and soloed at 16. After moving from his native England to the United States, he began a career in Sales and Marketing for a major airline.

A coveted promotional product provided by the airlines was a model of the aircraft flown by that line. These models were not available to the general public, but only to employees. "A model of the aircraft was the number one customer request," Bob noted.

While attending a trade show, Bob was given a model far superior to any he had in his collection. "It was more detailed, accurate, and well finished than any I had ever seen," he said. He sought out the manufacturer and was soon on a Taiwan bound plane to meet with Long Prosper, his eventual partner in the model business. After convincing the factory to permit him to represent their models, Bob sent samples out to several airlines.

What started as a recreational venture (begun, in part, to add to his own collection) became Flight Miniatures Inc. From an initial stock of about 30 model aircraft, Flight Miniatures has grown into a company offering almost 600 liveries to the collecting public. "Within a few weeks I had orders for models from three major airlines," Bob reported.

Bob located his new business in central Arizona, only in part because of the beautiful climate.

"We’re located one day’s drive from the Port of Long Beach, where the models come in to this country," he says. "We’re near the intersections of two major East-West and one North-South freeways. Strategically, it’s a great location."

So how does Flight Miniatures choose which models to produce?

"The vast majority of Flight Miniatures’ liveries are produced for the aircraft manufacturer or airline whose livery appears on the model," says Bob. "Occasionally, we produce a nostalgia series like the DC-3 and DC-4. These models are almost always produced in response to collectors’ requests."
